Reading beyond the textbook

Gnana Trust has urged the teachers to make reading a habit with the students. They hope that a reading room and a library would also be set up.

It was a momentous day for the students of Government lower primary school in Kambathanahalli in Gouribidnur taluk. The students are sure to cherish August 21 as a memorable day in their life. Because, that was the day the students, who had never been able to lay their hands on books other than textbooks, could see and hold a whole lot of glossy, popular story as well as knowledge-oriented books.

The Bangalore-based Gnana Trust chose Kambathanahalli to launch its maiden programme - Read to Live. The aim is motivate the school managements to inculcate the habit of reading among children.

As a first step in this direction, Gnana donated a large number of books to the Kamabathanahalli school, at a simple function organised on August 21 afternoon. This, the Trust hopes, would enthuse the School Development Management Committee (SDMC), the teachers and more than anyone, the community to establish a library in the school and also a reading room for elders in the village.

The programme was formally launched by SDMC Chairman K V Rama Reddy. Speaking on the occasion, Gnana Trustee B P Shashidhar said that students should make best use of the books as they are meant for them. He also urged the teachers to make reading books a habit.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Surekha, Member of the Trust, suggested the teachers to allow children to read the books donated by Gnana, at least one or two hours every week. She also assured that more books may come to the school if the books donated now are used for the good of children.

An art camp was also organised on the occasion to allow children to express themselves 'colourfully' on a wide, white canvas.

Gnana, which has selected 58 many school in Gouribidnur taluk, is all set to introduce its library programme in some more schools in the weeks to come.
